Dan Murphy: The Novelty Effect

Why the ‘boom in consumer trial of alt-meat shamburgers and chicken? A new market analysis IDs the real reason: It s all about the urge to try something new and different, if not better. Of all the poorly worded attempts to capture the “buzz” associated with the ongoing media salivation over the alt-meat meat category s latest introductions, few surpass this one from the website Takeout.com: “Most coverage of the rollout of meatless fast-food burgers... When Leadership is Lacking

Thank you STEVE KEATING CME, CSE for a great article! Some of you will find this post lacking. You ll find it off the mark because you believe that management and leadership are one in the same. You are convinced they are two words that describe the identical characteristics and skills. Before I write this next sentence I should remind you that I was a long time member of the Dale Carnegie organization. I believe... Read More

U.S. Producer Prices Exceeded Estimates in November

U.S. producer prices rose in November on advances in foods and transportation services, while a measure of underlying costs accelerated, offering some potential signs of inflation pressures bubbling up in the economy. The producer-price index advanced 0.1 percent from October, cooling from a rise that was the fastest in six years, Labor Department data showed Tuesday. The annual gain slowed to 2.5 percent from 2.9 percent. The Bloomberg survey median estimates called for no change... Read More

California Passes Animal Welfare Law

I am happy I don't own any restaurants in CA...... Californians voted to let chickens roam freely on Tuesday. Proposition 12, which would require all eggs sold in the state come from cage-free hens by 2022, was approved with 59% of the vote. Called by many the most progressive animal welfare law in the nation, Proposition 12 comes a decade after California banned battery cages with Proposition 2 in 2008. Proposition 12 was opposed by... Wholesale inflation is back again, PPI shows, but it's not rising as rapidly as it was earlier in the year

By JEFFRY BARTASH The wholesale cost of U.S. goods and services snapped back in September, but the level of inflationary pressure appears to have eased, at least temporarily. The producer price index climbed 0.2% last month, springing back from the first decline in a year and a half, the Labor Department said Wednesday . The increase matched the forecast of economists polled by MarketWatch. The increase in wholesale inflation over the past year, however, slowed... Read More

Beverage Brand Cannabis Investments Signal a Green Wave

by David Klemt | Sep 27, 2018 We re headed toward a much greener future, and I don t mean sustainability. There s no doubt that the bar, nightlife and restaurant industry, along with beverage brands, has been pushing for more responsible business practices. But the green I m talking about is cannabis, and, in turn, dollars. The topic of legal recreational cannabis and how it relates to our industry was discussed by a panel... Read More

U.S. producer prices post first drop in one-and-half years

Great thing for "Cost of Goods", however, these savings will be off-set with the increases in trucking. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. producer prices unexpectedly fell in August, recording their first drop in 1-1/2 years, as declines in the prices of food and a range of trade services offset an increase in the cost of energy products. The Labor Department said on Wednesday its producer price index for final demand slipped 0.1 percent last month after... Read More
